Proven Herd Sire
While we all get excited about new potential herd sires from
time to time, and rightfully so, the true breeding value of a herd sire is
rarely seen prior to his 5th birthday. That said, for a 4 year old sire to
lead a breed in registrations is quite impressive, and a testament to his
ability to sire high quality offspring across a wide array of operations.
In 2013, as a 4 year old, Onstar was the breed leader in registrations
with IBBA and now Cavender Brangus and Schmidt Farms have
elected to share in his legacy moving forward.
A discussion about Onstar can’t start without mentioning the
tremendous female base which fills the bottom side of his pedigree.
His granddam is the infamous female who maintained a 363 day
calving interval on 16 straight calves in the desert region of the
Southwest at New Mexico State University. Following in her mother’s
footsteps, the 924 cow had 7 straight spring born calves before being
sent to the donor pen. One could say 924’s stay in the donor pen was
quite successful as she produced numerous high selling full sib bulls
and females to Onstar, but none have quite had the impact that Onstar
has made on the breed.
Producing numerous high sellers throughout the breed
himself, sons of Onstar include the $25,000 selection of Ray Johnston
last fall through the GT@Neches River, SF Lonestar, as well as the
$19,000 CB GPS, selected by Draggin’ M Ranch in the same event. In
addition, what many consider one of the best breeding calving ease
bulls in the entire breed was a past high seller at the 2012 GT@Suhn’s
for $20,000 and also a son of Onstar raised by Mike Vorel, in the great
young Online. Onstar’s oldest daughters are just entering their prime
and are certainly the moderate framed, good uddered, sound footed,
fertile calf raisers one would expect given their lineage and as more
calve daily their value will continue to rise. With each new calf crop
this herd sire proves himself more and more.
An outcross to most GENETRUST genetics, as an individual
Onstar is moderate in his design while being extremely attractive in
his makeup, yet maintaining enough dimension and bone to satisfy
commercial bull buyers. On paper, Onstar’s balanced approach
includes rankings in the top 20% for the antagonistic traits of IMF &
SC. In the pasture Onstar has proven to be a tremendous breeding
bull with the ability to cover ground and settle cows at an above
average level.
Without a doubt one of the great opportunities of 2014, the
demand for Onstar’s progeny will continue to
escalate making possession of this breed leader
even more valuable moving forward.
Cavender
Brangus and Schmidt Farms are selling ¼ semen
interest and 100% possession and 200 straws of
semen.
Herd sires and females sold Friday evening will go through the ring. Bulls
and commercial females sold Saturday will not go through the ring but will
be presented on video during the auction. We encourage you to get to the
auction site early to allow you ample time to view the lots prior to the sale.
