We are honored to welcome you to 5L Ranch for our
“Profit-Seeker”
Spring Bull Sale.
We continually strive to improve our genetic infrastructure with cattle that are
efficient
,
problem free, profitable and adapt-
able
to a plethora of changing environmental dynamics. We believe cattle with the
WIDEBODY
shape are key to adaptability,
because they are able to consume enough low quality feedstuffs and keep on keeping on even when the going gets tough. This is
the engine that drives profitability for us at 5L. It’s what keeps us on course and the ever coming challenges at bay.
While the majority of our selection efforts have and will continue to focus on eliminating costly reproductive and longevity related
failures in the cowherd, we have an annually increasing Research & Development budget designed to better produce genetics that
enhance the value of our customers’ feeder calves through improved predictability for traits of economic relevance. Over the last de-
cade or more, this has included feeding and collecting carcass data each year on our own cattle, as well as collection of ultrasound
phenotypes on both yearling bulls and replacement heifers so that almost every animal born at 5Lmakes some contribution to our
improved knowledge of the genetics of feedlot performance and carcass value.
Over the past two years we’ve participated in structured progeny testing mating over 1000 cows – testing our young sires against
high accuracy reference to capture increased volumes of high quality harvest and feedlot performance data. More recently 5L’s
R&D budget invested in the hardware and software to enable the collection of feed intake and feed conversion phenotypes so that
we can identify cattle which gain most profitably. For decades we’ve measured Average Daily Gain – moving forward we want to
identify genetics that enhance
Average Daily Profit!
The price of this R&D is scary! We do it because we believe the future will belong to ranchers who can tie economic benefits of
their genetic inputs back to the value of their feeder calves. Thus, we’ve ramped up our efforts to identify genetics that deliver more
carcass premiums, and earn those with fewer days in the feedyard, and with less feed consumed.
Finally, we strive to continually provide information in the most user friendly and intuitive manner possible. Thus we combine our
intake, gain and conversion phenotypes into one economically weighted value of
Average Daily Profit.

sion He has afforded us. We are thankful He continues to faithfully guide our steps on the path of life’s journey.
