Over the past few years, folks who attend our sale have come to appreciate and understand 5L’s WideBody
scores an a relative measure of each animal’s total dimension. Higher WideBodies are wider based, softer
flanked, wide sprung with bold rib shape, deep in the heart girth with more depth and thickness of hind quar-
ter. As with any subjective measure it is important that the same person ‘score’ all the bulls.
Many of our
repeat customers have grown to value this relative description when they can’t make it to the sale and often
include a “minimumWideBody” score when placing bull orders.
5L cattle with this extra dimension have earned the reputation for excelling in lower input production systems
where cows must have the capacity to consume ample low quality forage. In the feedlot, WideBodies push
down the scales and are often heavier than they appear.
WideBody scores range
from 1-10, although a 10
is an “ideal” that is almost
never used. The size of the
5L cowherd and multi-gen-
erational use of WideBody
scores makes it possible for
us to offer 400 bulls with no
WideBody scores below a 7.
