ultrablack Genetics
We first experimented with breeding Angus to
Brangus in 1996 and were impressed with the results.
At that time the IBBA was not able to compute EPDs on
the cattle and backed off the program for a few years. We
retained the females and mated them back to Brangus
sires. The progeny from these matings convinced us that
by putting Brangus back on them that they became more
predictable and consistent in their type and performance.
We made the decisions to move forward with the program
and eventually the IBBA was able to start computing EPDs
so we could more thoroughly evaluate the progeny and
provide our commercial customers with more reliable
information.
Our goal from the beginning, as it is today, is
to breed cattle that would benefit and enhance what
our commercial customer needs. It did not take long
for us to realize the added benefits Ultrablack’s could
have when properly implemented into the purebred
population through a breeding up to Brangus program.
We are encouraged that a recent bylaw change will enable
breeders to register as Brangus animals once they reach
a 7/8 Brangus percentage. We encourage your evaluation
of the Ultrablack animals in this offering and encourage
you to evaluate the two Angus females in this offering
and the potential they could have on the future of your
program. Demand for Ultrablack progeny was evident
as the bulls averaged $6148 through the last spring’s
2014 GENETRUST@Suhn Cattle Co. Sale. Marketplace
acceptability is an important factor when analyzing the
potential of new programs. The Ultrablack program has
stood that test and will help our breed conquer more
market share.
