Welcome to the first annual Flat Water Red Angus Gang production sale and the fourth
consecutive sale that we have been a part of with Cooksley Red Angus and Sandbur
Ridge Red Angus. We are all very excited about seeing past customers, friends and
new customers in Valentine on the 25th of March. Milissa, our family and I are thankful
to be a part of this group of breeders and look forward to this event each year.
This set of bulls represents the long term direction of our program more than any
other that we have offered previously. We have been able to accomplish this by utiliz-
ing two primary herd sire groups. The first is centered upon our main A.I. herd sire,
Mlk Crk Express 9127. He offers calving ease, fleshing ability, depth of body, width of
base and natural thickness on a moderate frame. His first daughters have calved this
year and thus far, we couldn’t be happier with the results. They are capacious, soft and
exhibit excellent maternal qualities.
The second sire group is courtesy of our top walking herd sire, Ridge Troubadour
0014. He is a 5L Tradesman son that has unparalleled depth and production on the
maternal side of his pedigree. We purchased this bull from Sandbur Ridge in order to
focus in on longevity, fertility and sustainability. Realizing that these traits are some of
the least heritable only increases the need to try and propagate and select for them.
Troubadour offers a nice balance of calving ease, length of side, power and carcass
quality with a foundation of maternal strength.
Our bulls were developed again with Sandbur Ridge Red Angus’ bulls. We have been
growing our bulls together for the past 4 years. Despite the sticker shock on feed and
input prices, Ross and I agreed to maintain our development ration and program due
to the positive feedback that we have received from our customers in respect to the
durability and longevity of the bulls that they have purchased. The bulls are developed
and grown on a DDG, grain and oats mixture with free choice hay. The grain mix never
exceeds 1% of body weight and is actually held at a maximum level from mid-January
on. We are not trying to maximize performance. We are trying to maximize longevity
and soundness in our product. The bulls gained 2.72 lbs. per head per day from wean-
ing to yearling date and averaged 1.30 sq. inches of REA per CWT.
Thanks for the opportunity to serve your Red Angus genetic needs. We look forward
to visiting with and seeing you all on sale day. Please feel free to contact us with any
questions that you may have. We welcome you to stop by if you are in our area. We
welcome visitors and always like to visit about cattle.
