Welcome to our First Annual Sale together as the Flat Water Red Angus Gang. While this is the first sale
that we’ve held together under this title, this is actually our 4th Annual sale together as a group of breed-
ers. We are excited to be moving forward together in this new venture and are confident that the quality
and depth that you have come to expect from each of us will meet your expectations. The goal of our
operations and the goals of this sale have not changed. We are still dedicated to producing and marketing
highly maternal, problem free, Red Angus cattle.
As producers in today’s agricultural environment, we are all riddled with potential and real risks that
threaten to inhibit our ability to be sustainable and profitable. While the most prevalent topic on our minds
may be the blistering drought that we are all praying will end soon, there are hosts of other challenges
and outside perils that are equally as threatening.
Available data from the most recent Ag Census, as reported by the USDA, shows an alarming, yet not
surprising trend. The data shows that the number of beginning farmer and ranchers as a percentage of
total U.S. farm and ranches is decreasing on a consistent basis. In addition, that same set of data reveals
that most of the beginning farmers and ranchers rely on more off farm income than on farm income as a
percentage of total income.
This tells us two things. First of all, there are a small number of people that want to return to the farm
and ranch and as such the average age of the U.S. farmer or rancher is increasing. Secondly, this tells us
that in order to be profitable as a sole farm and ranch operation, with no outside income, it takes an ever
increasing number of of cows in order to achieve profitability on slimmer margins as a result of increases
in annual input costs in the way of fuel, feed, equipment and family living.
In essence, time matters. There is a reduced labor pool available to today’s rancher at a time when it takes
a greater number of mother cows to make a living. This equates to a larger burden on an aging ranch
force. It equates to a young producer that is splitting time between a day job and the ranch operation.
It equates to the need to have maternal based genetics that are efficient, functional, sound, fertile and
sustainable.
There is a huge opportunity amidst all of this volatility and stress. Today is a genetic opportunity to create
a herd that is built upon the foundation that the Flat Water Gang is dedicated to. We are raising maternal,
problem free Red Angus genetics and are doing so in a manner that is beneficial to our customer. We
don’t over feed our bulls for our gain. We develop them slowly and responsibly for yours.
With utmost sincerity we thank you for taking an interest in our program and hope that you will take the
time to contact us with questions so that we can better meet your needs and help you with your genetic
selections.
Make a decision to ride with the Flat Water Gang and raise cattle that are the boss and envy of the prairie.
