Welcome to our Fourth Annual Production Sale, and our first as the Flat Water Gang.
While the members in this year’s sale group have changed a little, the quality of the
bulls in the offering is outstanding and the customer service will continue to be priority
number one.
2012 was a year of outstanding challenges and one wonderful change for me and my
operation. On May 28th, in Ord, Nebraska, I married Dani, and that has been a wonder-
ful change in my life. As for the challenges, well, we all know the drought has forced us
to make decisions and analyze our operations in order to try and move forward. I am
thankful for the breeding decisions we made about 5 years ago as they have turned out
to be very helpful when dealing with less quality forage and high priced feed. I really
believe this offering of bulls holds as much quality from top to bottom as we have ever
produced.
I have broken our yearling bulls into 3 groups. We are starting out with a few front
end bulls that offer fresh pedigrees and outstanding individual performance. I followed
those up with a sire grouping of 5L Legend 425V and MLK CRK Express 9127 bulls.
I feel the 425V and 9127 sire groups offer the best overall balance of birth weight,
growth, carcass, and are the kind that will build some outstanding females for the
future of your operation. The second group of bulls contains our calving ease offering.
There are 5 different sire groups represented and they all seem to have the softer body
condition and outstanding confirmation that will allow them to cover your heifers or
cows for years to come. The final group of yearling bulls contains our growth bulls.
These are larger framed, higher birth weight bulls that will sire heavy calves in the fall
and leave you with a high performance oriented female should you choose to keep
replacements. The aged bulls are embryo calves that have combined some of the best
of the older pedigrees and newer pedigrees in the breed.
The bulls were ultra-sounded on February 17th and the results confirm that we are
breeding natural muscle and thickness as opposed to feeding it on to them. This year’s
group of 54 bulls averaged 1.23 square inches of REA/CWT. In 2012, they averaged
1.26 and in 2011 they averaged 1.26. This speaks to the approach we have taken to
breed well-muscled, big volume cattle that can be sustained for longer periods of time
on lesser quality feeds and still rebreed and maintain body condition.
Thank you for your interest in our program and I look forward to visiting with you
As another bull sale approaches, I look back on the previous year and it was a test of
one’s resolve. Between the drought and the widespread fires, it was a certainly a year
that won’t soon be forgotten. As we move forward with the lowest cow numbers in
recent history it is an exciting time to be in the cattle business.
Perhaps the most rewarding part of what we do is working together as a family on our
operation. With the exception of Jilleen, my crew has gotten another year older and has
developed into quite a formidable force around the ranch. We have a lot of fun together
and it is a daily reminder that we are thankful and fortunate to share the lifestyle and
family environment that we do. Thanks for your interest in our program and we look
forward to seeing you on sale day, or sooner.

about our offering. I would also encourage you to talk with others who have purchased
bulls from us in the past and get their input and experiences with our bulls. I hope
2013 will be an outstanding year for you and your operation.
