CED
– Calving Ease Direct, is expressed as a difference in
percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating
greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average
difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when
he is bred to first-calf heifers. Calving Ease Direct scores on the
sale bulls is an average of the 3 Sires, this will give the closest
reference.
DOC
– Docility, is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle
temperament, with a higher value indication more favorable
docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a
sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where
temperament problems are not an issue, this expected
difference would not be realized. Docility scores on the sale
bulls is an average of the 3 Sires, which will give the closest
reference. Scoring the bulls ourselves would be a biased
opinion, we don’t light fuses here but that doesn’t mean a bull
doesn’t have a fuse that can be lit. To stay honest, an average
should score the bulls effectively and objectively.
BW
– Birth Weight EPD, expressed in pounds, is a predictor of
a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared
to that of other sires.
WW
–Weaning Weight EPD, expressed in pounds, is a predictor
of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny
compared to that of another sire’s.
Milk
– Maternal Milk EPD, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit
for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters
compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that
part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering
ability.
YW
– Yearling Weight EPD, expressed in pounds, is a predictor
of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny
compared to that of other sires.
MW
– Mature Weight EPD, expressed in pounds, is a predictor
of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire
compared to the daughters of other sires. The lower the MW,
the more moderate the daughters will be.
CW
– Carcass Weight EPD, expressed in pounds is a predictor
of the differences in hot carcass weight of sire’s progeny
compared to progeny of other sires.
Marb
– Represented in actual marbling scores from Ultrasound.
BF
– Represented in actual fat thickness, expressed in inches.
REA
– Represented in actual rib eye area.
Scrotal
– Posted are actual scrotal measurements taken on
1-23-17 by Dr. T.W. Watkins, D.V.M. of Red Willow Animal Clinic.
(boxes marked – will be updated the day of the sale)
Calf Hip Height
– Actual Hip Height of calf recorded on
weaning day.
Cow Age
– Represents the age of the cow at the time the calf
was being raised.
Cow BCS
- Signifies what Condition Score the cow was the day
her calf was weaned, expresses fleshing ability while lactating.
Calf % Weaned
– Represents the percentage of calf weaned
off at weaning, we are selecting for a higher percentage.
Calving Interval
– Listed are the days in which the cow calved
in 2015-2016, coming 3-year-olds will be marked with a “–“ due
to not calving, although some coming 3’s will show a calving
interval number due to already calving in 2017 before printing
the catalog. This information is important for selecting future
females that can calve every +-365 days. We use this as an
indicator of fertility as most of these are bred artificially.
Brand ID
- The Bulls identification is branded on the Right
shoulder of Blackrose bulls and on the Right hip of Beeby
(BBA) bulls. We have found that our cattle last longer than the
tradition green tattoo ink used when tattooing in the ear, a
brand is permanent and is easily visual.
Act BW
– Actual birthweights are listed.
Adj WW
– Adjusted 205 day weaning weights are listed.
PGS
– Paternal Grandsire to the bull
Sire
– Sire to the bull
PGDS
– Paternal Granddam sire to the bull
MGS
– Maternal grandsire to the bull
Dam
– Dam to the bull
MGDS
– Maternal Granddam Sire
CED-BW-WW-YW-MW-CW-Milk
to the right of the Pedigree
allows our customers to know what the individual parents
EPDs are within the pedigree. We’ve seen too many so called
“calving ease” bulls with non calving ease parentage. They may
be, but we’re not fond of those surprises.

Milk
(as seen in the page footers)
signifies that:
the higher the CED (calving ease direct) number the more
calving ease a bull will be
the lower BW (birth weight) number the more calving ease a
bull will be
more moderate WW (weaning weight) the more moderate for
replacement females, the higher for feeder calves. Same for
YW (yearling weight)
the lower the MW (mature weight) the smaller daughters
produced will be
the higher the CW (carcass weight) the greater the carcass
weight
the lower the Milk the less requirements the female will need
to raise a calf, maintain her body condition and most important
effect on her fertility
