The Science of Performance Measurement
We have been doing boring, mundane and unexciting things here to measure Angus genetics
for the last 25 years. We take weights and turn them in to the American Angus Association’s
breed improvement program known as Angus Herd Improvement Records or simply AHIR.
We measure our progress with scales. We wish to provide practical performance genetics
with no fads or frills to you, our customers. The records we routinely take are birth weight,
weaning weight, yearling weight, scrotal circumference and yearling ultrasound measure-
ments for Rib Eye Area, Marbling and fat cover. By continually studying these records we
sure know what our cow herd is capable of.
In 1996 ABS and Circle A Angus Ranch of Missouri began a genetic discovery partnership
that continues today. Thousands of progeny records have been collected on ABS AI sires for
traits such as feedlot intake and gain. This gives us the most accurate feed efficiency data in
the industry. Data are also collected on heifer pregnancy, maternal weaning data and cow
longevity. Indexes have been developed for end product profitability as well as maternal
profitability. This is excellent genetic information available nowhere else in the industry. If
you had a chance to use an AI sire whose progeny have proven that they can convert feed to
gain more efficiently, wouldn’t you use him? We have that chance and we have used many of
those outstanding bulls. On our page of reference sires we will designate those sires that have
finished in the top 35% in total profit or feed efficiency of all sires tested with a Sire Alliance
Bull Logo. Sons and daughters of these bulls will give you a little more. If you would like to
