ASSISTING OUR CUSTOMERS BY ADDING CALF VALUE
In November of 2015 in a very competitive market, 586 feeder calves sired by Boyd Beef and
Myers Angus bulls earned additional premiums over the top of the market. This verifies that buyers
are willing to pay extra premiums for cattle that perform in the feed yard and excel on the rail and
replacement females also commanded a premium because of the known maternal superiority of
the genetics offered from the Boyd and Myers programs.
We are committed to working with our valued customers to ensure their success by adding value
to their calf crops. The success of our feeder calf sale proves that top genetics don’t cost producers
– they add value and premiums!
VALUE OF A BOYD BEEF BULL.
Increase in pounds per calf as a result of a top-performing bull
X
Number of cows bred per year
X
Average selling price of calves for 4 years
=
Extra dollars you can pay for a better bull
Example:
A bull that will add 30 pounds over industry average, bred to 25 cows for 4 years and you sell the
calves for $1.80 per pound.
30 pounds X 25 cows = 750 pounds X 4 years = 3,000 pounds X $1.80 = $5,400
The bull is worth $5,400
more
than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this
formula and put your own figures in and see what you can afford to pay. This equation does not consider the
increase in value due to calving-ease, higher quality replacement heifers, yearling growth, feedlot gain and
improved carcass quality.
