We bred some of our first Ultrablack cattle in 1996. At that
time we could not even get EPD’S generated on them and
for that reason we backed off the program for a few years.
We analyzed the cattle we had and when breeding them
back to Brangus were convinced that by putting Brangus
back on them they became more predictable and consistent
in their type and performance. We made the decision to
move forward with that program and eventually the IBBA
started to compute EPD’s. The Ultrablack program has
always been a part of our goal to produce a product for
our commercial customer that would work for him and
the consumer. We did not sit on the sidelines and wait
to see if this program worked or to assess its profitability
pending a by- law change by the Association. We searched
for the best and most proven Angus genetics available
and have used the front end of our Brangus population,
including through ET, to offer our customers a product
that would benefit their program and their success. Our
goal from the beginning, as it is today, was to breed cattle
that would benefit and enhance what our commercial
customer needed. It did not take long for us to realize
the added benefits Ultrablacks could have when properly
implemented into the purebred population through a
breeding up to Brangus program. We were encouraged
that last year a bylaw change voted on by the membership
allowed us to register as Brangus those animals that had
reached a 7/8 Brangus percentage. This allows breeders to
benefit from the potential of the Ultrablack population. We
