Unfairly, the Brangus breed for years has been
pigeon holed with the rest of the Brahman influence
breeds for lack of carcass quality and muscle. Many are
unaware of the history of the years of ultrasound data
behind this breed of cattle. We would like to give you this
history.
In 1985 Glenn Brinkman recognized this and
decided to take the bull by the horns and identify the
genetics that would guide the Brangus breed toward
cattle that would compete with the entire industry from
this respect. Glenn Brinkman’s foresight and vision in
1986 to work with Kansas State and Iowa State to develop
ultrasound technology to assist in identifying individuals
with superior carcass merit has enabled Brangus genetics
that excel for these traits to be recognized. Over the past
quarter of a century the Brangus breed has made great
strides in identifying the genetic lines that will produce
a higher quality product and thus after these years of
collection of ultrasound data on thousands of cattle we
have continually seen improvement in the readings for
IMF and REA. These are genetics that will meet and
exceed the quality grade specifications required by USPB,
CAB, and other quality based grid premium programs.
Brangus and Ultrablack genetics no longer need
to be considered as just another Brahman influence
breed but as a breed that will stand alone in its ability to
compete with the English and Continental cattle in the
industries quest to produce a consistent enjoyable eating
experience for the consumer. The current crop of yearling
bulls have definitely excelled and showed improvement
from previous years. They have not only shown
improvement from previous years for carcass traits but
we have accomplished this without there being a negative
effect on growth, birth weight and scrotal.
The majority of the genetic material that is
included in not only this offering but also the genetic
base behind GENETRUST encompasses the growth
and improvement that has been made with the 27 years
of ultrasound data that has been done on thousands of
cattle. From the earliest outliers to be identified such
as Brinks New Performer 772X, Performer of Brinks,
Transformer of Brinks, for muscle and CEO, 13F, and
Lambert for IMF it is quite astonishing the progress that
has been made. As we scanned and weighed the yearling
bulls that ended up on the pages of this catalog we were
excited that again they raised the bar another notch on
the strength and consistency of not only the scan data but
all the weights and measurements taken. The averages the
yearling bulls are:
Now we fully realize that we need not get totally
wrapped up in just raw numbers and have been cautioned
as well as have cautioned others that we need to use this
judiciously in evaluating our progress and direction.
However, ultrasound data does have some relevance in
the whole picture. Bull customers who have fed their
own cattle have furnished us with harvest data with very
favorable results however we felt the need to acquire
data on our own cattle. We had 34 head of lower end
steers and heifers that were born in the fall of 2011 fed
at Tiffany Feeders in Herrington, KS. They went on feed
July 31, 2012 and endured for the first 60 days extremely
hot temperatures. They were harvested on January 16th
through US Premium Beef with excellent results.
Eighty-
eight percent (88%) of these cattle were choice or better
with 12% of them grading prime and 54.5% of the cattle
qualified for CAB or other quality based premiums.
They dressed 64.3 % and after all cost for feed interest
etc. were deducted returned $78.67 over what their
projected market value was in July when they went on
feed. Bottom line they made money (most cattle being
fed during that time frame were losing money or just
breaking even ) and there harvest data was reflective
of what we would have expected from the ultrasound
data that their herd mates that we kept for bulls and
replacement heifers scanned.
Tiffany Feeder’s did an
excellent job with these cattle and are pleased with the
results that they have seen from the Brangus influence
cattle they have fed. They have over the past several years
purchased and fed the Brangus influenced steers raised by
our neighbor’s and friends the Wiggins Ranch.
