Nutritional Feed Efficiency
Every bull in this sale was tested at the Genetic Development Center south of College Station, Texas in a feeding environment that
measured every pound of feed consumed against every pound of gain. The bulls were warmed up and taught to eat in individual
feeding bunks designed to measure exact feed intake for 21 days, and then monitored and measured on a structured feed efficiency
test for 70 days.
Residual Feed Intake (RFI)
is defined as the difference between actual feed intake and feed intake predicted on the basis of the ani-
mal’s daily gain and maintenance requirements for its body weight. A more negative RFI is favored as this indicates less feed intake for
given weight and gain. These exact feed consumption and daily gain measurements also allow the computation of Feed Conversion
Ratio (FCR) expressed in a ratio against all contemporaries by measuring pounds of feed consumed per pound of gain. Also, each bull’s
Feed Efficiency Average Daily Gain (FEADG) denotes their average daily gain during the 70 day testing period. Finally, Residual Feed
Index (R InX) is an index given as a percentage above or below the group average calculated using the RFI value and Average Daily Gain
during test period. A higher R InX indicates a more desirable overall ranking based within the test group.
We know we can select for improved efficiency by placing genetic pressure on this trait, and do so without negatively affecting others
areas in our production systems. If so, we can meet other components of our breeding plan by redesigning beef animals that have the
genetic capacity to do more in their selected environments with less inputs. We believe this selection program based on nutritional
efficiency can affect, and improve economics in all areas of beef production from cow herd foraging ability, backgrounding on planted
pastures, and feedlot conversion.
Feed Efficiency Definitions
FCR (Feed Conversion Ratio):
Daily dry matter intake expressed as a ratio against contemporaries based on pounds of feed required
per one pound of gain.
FEADG (Feed Efficiency Average Daily Gain):
Average daily gain expressed in pounds of gain on a daily basis measured during the 70
day feed efficiency test.
RFI (Residual Feed Intake):
A feed efficiency trait that quantifies variation in feed intake that is unrelated to body weight and average
daily gain. Measures animals that consume less feed than expected for a given body weight and expected growth rate.
R InX (Residual Feed Intake Index):
Expressed in % above or below the group average calculated using measured RFI and average
daily gain during 70 day test period.
