What is an EPD?
The Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is the increase or decrease in performance
for a given trait that you can expect from the progeny of an animal compared to breed
average. EPDs are expressed in pounds as a plus (+) or minus (-) figure.
What makes EPDs so valuable?
EPDs take into consideration the performance of the individual as well as the perfor-
mance of relatives and progeny, and the within-herd ratios of contemporary progeny
groups. They also factor out the management and environmental differences that may
exist between herds. EPDs can accurately be used to compare bulls in different herds
within the breed.
It is important to select for EPD traits that match your operational goals. If you are
looking for a bull to use on virgin heifers, birth weight EPD is a primary consideration. If
you keep or sell replacement heifers, milk EPD is a major factor. If your calves are sold
at weaning time with no replacement females retained, then weaning EPD is of vital
importance. Those of you who background your calves should concentrate on yearling
weight EPD. Many times a balance in all traits is required, depending on your individual
situation.
It is important to understand that EPDs are accompanied by accuracy values and may
fluctuate up or down as accuracy increases.
In addition to the below stated guarantee, all cattle sell under the Suggested Sale
Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association.
BULLS:
1. All bulls selling are guaranteed to be breeders for the first breeding season.
Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the
bulls. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be
returned to the farm/ranch of the seller if in good condition and complying with the
health requirements of the seller’s state. The seller shall be entitled to a 6 month
trial following the return of the animal in which to prove that the animal is a breeder.
If at the end of 6 months the seller is unable to prove that the animal is a breeder
the seller shall, at the option of the buyer, replace the animal with another of equal
value or refund the purchase price.
The return of the full purchase price shall in any case be deemed full satisfaction
and settlement.
2. This breeding guarantee on the bulls by the seller will apply with the exception of:
(a) injury or disease occurring after the sale, (b) gross negligence or willful miscon-
duct on the part of the buyer.
3. However, all bulls selling for $3,500 or more are guaranteed against breeding injury
for the first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period
following the first turnout of the bulls. Breeding injury is defined as injury to penis
or preputial tear with inability to extend. If a replacement bull is available, he will be
provided, or if the buyer prefers, credit toward one bull will be given in the following
year’s sale, less salvage value of the injured bull, less $10 per day the bull has been
in use since first turnout.
Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull
being sold for salvage. Guarantee ends August 31, 2016.
FEMALES:
1. All yearling females sell as open and ready to breed.
2. Fall calving females are safe in calf unless otherwise noted on sale day.
3. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned
to the farm of the seller if in good condition and complying with the health require-
ments of the seller’s state. The seller shall be entitled to six months trial following
the return of the animals in which to prove that the animal is a breeder. If at the end
of six months the seller is unable to prove the animal is a breeder the seller shall,
a the option of the buyer, replace the animal with another of equal value, or if the
buyer prefers, credit toward one female will be given in the following year’s sale.
4. All claims for adjustment or refund on the females must be made by December 15,
2016.
Mortality insurance on the cattle will be available at the settlement table on sale day.
