A nice daughter of SydGen Legacy 2813, the $30,000 addition to the Express
Ranch herdsire roster, co-topping our 2015 sale.
We now have six $ Indexes available on Angus cattle. $Weaning, the maternal
index, is a measure of the economic impact of four primary areas affecting an-
imals from birth through weaning. Those four areas are birth weight, weaning
weight, maternal milk, and mature cow size. It assumes an 80-20 mix of cows
to heifers. $Feedlot is a measure of the value associated with post-weaning
growth. $Grid is actually a combination of $Quality and $Yield Grade, and is a
measure of total end product value, using ultrasound and carcass data when
both are available. $B is a combination of $F and $G into a terminal value
post-weaning. These indexes combine EPD values together to measure their
combined economic impact on a dollars per head basis. We do not print all of
these indexes on every animal, but do sometimes reference them in a footnote
on a particular animal. On sale day, every EPD and every bio-economic index
will be posted for every animal, as of November 18.
With any index, there are assumptions made which may or may not fit your
particular operation. For instance, if you are going to use a bull on cows only,
the bias toward lower BW in the $W index may not be needed. If the bull is
going to be used solely on heifers, you may need more bias toward lower birth
weights. If you have unlimited feed resources, the bias toward smaller mature
size in the $W index may not be needed.
The same holds true for particular carcass traits. If you have feedlot and kill
data on your cattle, you can fine-tune your growth and carcass trait needs more
accurately with individual EPDs than with the $B index. Actually, as the price of
beef has driven $B values higher the last few years, Carcass Weight (CW) has
become the dominant component of the $B computations. If you are already
pushing the limits of over-weight carcasses, you may need to select for less
CW EPD, therefore making the higher $B bulls less desirable in your scenario.
The $ Indexes
Several SydGen herd sires rank high on the Docility EPDs of the American
Angus Association. SydGen CC&7, SydGen Liberty GA 8627, SAF Connection,
BAR Decision 7229-3320 and SydGen Exceed 3223 all rank in the elite top 2%
of proven sires for Docility EPD. Twenty-nine more SydGen sires rank in the top
10% for Docility. All told, 30 SydGen sires that rank in the top 10% or better for
Docility have progeny in this offering, or females bred to them.
Data from the Tri-County Futurity showed a $40 per head advantage for docile
cattle versus those who scored nervous to very aggressive.
