SYDGEN RACHEL 4228
MATERNAL SISTER TO LOT 370
LOT 368 - SYDGEN ROYAL LASS 6037
Heifer
Calves
There is a wide range of thought as to the merit of genomic testing for the production
traits. We have tested several the last five years, and have not seen much movement
from their original EPD values, except for traits with lower numbers of phenotypes
turned in, such as CED, DMI and HP. As a herd that turns in a lot of phenotypes (data)
to AHIR, we have already built up the accuracy, and don’t have as much to gain from
genomics. (We estimate this herd turns in some 15,000 pieces of information to
AHIR yearly.)
We have seen the genomic scores lining up closer and closer to the performance of
the cattle over time, and this year, we have genomic tested every bull in the offering.
The added plus, besides offering the latest technology, is the parent verification that is
included with the testing.
We feel the most value is for those younger cattle who have not had gain and ultra-
sound information processed yet, or individuals who land in very small contemporary
groups, or ET calves who happen to draw a bad recip or an exceptional recip. We do
agree the best way to utilize genomic predictions is to integrate them into the EPD
system, just as AAA is doing. We also believe genomics is just one more competitive
advantage where the Angus breed is the leader.
We do not believe genomic testing can or should be used as a substitute for actual
performance testing. We still need that good data, in proper contemporary groups, to
train the markers properly.
This year, with more customers asking and talking about it, we are genomic testing
more animals than we have in previous sales. If they are already done, and incorpo-
rated into the animal’s EPDs, there will be an HD 50K, i50K, GGPHD or GGPLD logo in
the book for that animal. Some will probably not be processed in time for those results
to be incorporated into their EPDs before press time. In general, we are testing all the
pictured cattle, along with every spring bull calf and every fall yearling bull. Please
check our website, and we will post all 50K results, as well as having them available
on sale day. Also, on sale day, we will have a print-out posted by the office with the
most up-to-date EPDs available on every sale animal, as of the November 18 NCE run.
