It is again my pleasure to welcome you to the 37th annual Go-Pher the Purple Sale. 2017 has been a year of ups and
downs in the Agriculture sector. The Dakotas and Montana have experienced one of the worst droughts in many years
and the grain markets continue to struggle, but the feeder calf markets have rallied going into the fall season. This market
is as strong as we have seen in some time and is encouraging for our fellow cattlemen.
New to the Go-Pher sale this year you will notice some consignments from some out of state breeders. This change
was brought on by the decision of the Minnesota Hereford Breeders to increase entries for the sale. After much
deliberation and planning, the board of directors chose to invite several breeders from North Dakota and Wisconsin to
consign to the sale. The response was very good with several of the new consignors having supported the sale in the
past as buyers. I would like to welcome these new consignors and thank them for their participation as well as thank the
consignors from within the state of Minnesota for their continued support of the sale.
As I write this letter, we have recently returned from picturing and videoing the sale offering and I am pleased to say
that the consignors have brought you an outstanding lineup of cattle for your consideration. The Lot 1 donation heifer is
being consigned by the Shafer Hereford Family, who celebrated their 100th Anniversary in the Hereford business this year,
and I must say she may be the best donation heifer I have seen since my involvement with this sale!
Follow that in the catalog with a group of five herd bull prospects that again I will say may be as deep of a set as we
have had. A small but powerful group of bred cows and a large and impressive offering of heifer calves and bred heifers.
There truly is something for everyone from show prospects to front pasture cow prospects and bred females ready to
make you money.
Returning to the sale this year is the Elite 8 sale on Friday night during the Annual Banquet at the Hotel. The sale will
feature some of the Minnesota’s freshest and most proven genetic opportunities, including embryo packages, the Right
to Flush and pick of the Calf Crop opportunities. The Go-Pher Sale will be broadcast on DV Auctions on Saturday but
will not be available Friday night, so if you are interested in anything on the sale Friday night and cannot attend, please
contact myself or any of the sale staff for assistance.
As always, I look forward to seeing you all in Hutchinson the second weekend in December!
Regards,
Steve Wolff
