We are often asked about nutrition. Our basic philosophy is to have
the nutritional level strong enough to allow genetic differences to be
expressed, but not high enough to mask those differences. Our creep
feed is 100% whole oats. Heifer calves are only allowed access to
creep at about 30 days pre-weaning, just enough so they know how to
eat at weaning time. Heifers are fed supplemental feed through their
AI breeding at 14-16 months of age. After that point, they are totally
on grass the rest of their life here, except for silage and hay as needed
during the winter. Our pastures are predominantly K31 fescue, but we
do keep a good stand of clovers and lespedeza in them. We have a few
orchard grass and big bluestem pastures, and utilize rotational graz-
ing as much as possible.
Fall bulls after weaning are self-fed Purina Impact Grower on fescue
paddocks until yearling weights are taken, then switched over to hay,
silage, and limited grain. The January bull calves are hand-fed from
weaning to sale day on a 2/3 oats, 1/3 corn ration with limited silage.
