Performance Information
The EPDs printed are all current as of September 27, 2012. Progeny
ratios are printed on cows as of the same date. (Example: BWR 6-103,
WWR 6-102, YWR 3-104 means the cow has six calves weaned or
recorded with an average weaning ratio of 102, those 6 calves had
an average birth weight ratio of 103, and three of those had yearling
weights turned in with an average ratio of 104.)
We print ratios because many of our customers like to see them.
But because of differences in the performance levels between herds
and contemporary groups, and a multitude of factors that can affect
any one individual weight (which is the basis for the ratio), EPDs HAVE
BEEN SHOWN TO BE AS MUCH AS NINE TIMES MORE ACCURATE THAN
RATIOS AS A SELECTION TOOL.
(
Consider the three to four hours that it takes to weigh and vacci-
nate a set of 110 bull calves on weaning day. There will be consider-
able difference in fill between the first calves weighed and the last
calves weighed.)
All spring calves in this sale have had birth and weaning weights
processed through AHIR, and the EPDs printed reflect that data. Data
from those calves has been used to update the progeny ratios of their
dams, where applicable. No spring bull calves born after February 1
will be in this sale offering.
Also on sale day, we will furnish current weight, frame score,
average daily gain, and projected yearling weights on the spring bull
calves. Projected yearling weights are calculated by multiplying their
post-weaning ADG by 160, and adding that result to their adj. 205-day
weight. This is not an official 365-day weight.
In this sale book, you will see ratios for BW, WW, and YW on some
of the ET calves. The Association is now supplying this information,
and adjusting the interim EPDs accordingly, for those calves born out
of registered Angus recipient cows. This methodology is called the
three parent model, due to the two genetic parents and the influence
of the environmental parent, the recipient dam. These ratios are
determined within their weaning contemporary group and within those
ET calves raised by registered Angus recipients, after adjustment for
age of dam. This may be confusing at times, especially when some
calves within a flush were raised by a registered Angus recipient and
some were not.
ET calves raised by commercial recipients will still carry EPDs that
are the average of their sire and dam, and are lower accuracy than
their counterparts raised by a registered Angus cow.
