Much is said and written about using low BW bulls, with the premise be-
ing you end up with more live calves.
Our January through March, 2010 calving season was certainly one of the
toughest any of us can remember, with extended periods of cold mud, frozen
mud, and days without sunlight, changing into one of the hottest, wettest
summers we have seen. We did experience the most death loss ever.
As we looked at the factors, and what might be done differently, an inter-
esting fact emerged from the statistics.
For death loss, we included those dead at birth and all those who died
pre-weaning. We found that calves with birth weights of 89 or less had three
times the death loss as those who weighed 90 or more. Admittedly, there
were not near as many 90+ calves as there were less than 90.
So, we looked at the calves weighing 80 and up versus those weighing 79
and down. These two groups were very similar in terms of total numbers.
The death loss was over twice as high on the calves weighing 79 or less,
compared to those weighing 80 and up.
This does not mean we advocate breeding virgin heifers to high BW bulls.
But having some BW in your calves out of cows might just give them the
constitution and stamina to live through the elements Mother Nature throws
at us.
