weaning weights taken on May 16 and 17, generally 10 days
after actual weaning. Bulls were put on a complete, self-fed
ration in two 20-acre fescue pastures until yearling weights,
scrotal measurements, and ultrasound scans were taken on
August 30 and 31, for total days on feed of 106 days. Their fi-
nal weight and ultrasound weight are the same. There was no
warm-up” (or shrink out) period between the date weaning
weights were taken and their beginning test weight. The feed
we have used on these bulls now for twelve years, Purina
Impact Grower, does have limiters in it, and we have been
pleased with the condition and the soundness of the bulls
coming off test. Bulls were all vaccinated with Pfizer Preg
Guard FP-10 and poured with Ivermectin when they came
off test, and gradually converted to a silage and hay based
ration, which they stay on until sale day. We wean late, and
have a short feeding period in order to better utilize spring
grass, and to help keep the bulls from being over-conditioned.
One of the side-effects is that the higher-gaining bulls get a
slightly larger boost on their adj. yearling weights than what
might seem appropriate from the actual weights.
