Profile
I would like you
to meet a special
Montana ranching
family. Roger and
Janet Braten, their
son Wilkie and
daughter Katie
are ranchers near
Roberts, Montana. Roger has run
his own cattle and managed cattle for owners ever since
I met him and Janet 21 years ago. When I think of them,
it makes me smile and appreciate a close knit ranching
family that has quality values. When you see one of them,
you usually see all of them. Roger and Janet have created
an interest, appreciation, and knowledge of cattle in
Wilkie and Katie. Their participation in the 4-H program
further strengthens that family bond.
Roger and Janet run about 100 cows of their own along
with 120 Angus cows of David Patterson’s on a ranch
near Roberts. It has a hay base in the creek bottom and
the cattle run on the foothills in the summer. Roger
has used Salers influenced cattle for 23 years. He was
running a 1000 cows on an open range ranch in the Pryor
area with very little help when I first met him. Roger says
when he started using Salers bulls, “I went from calving
cows to tagging calves.” He now has Salers and Angus
influenced cows on the ranch and finds the two breeds
work well together.
Roger runs a very successful synchronized A.I. program
with the most current protocol knowledge on his cows
and heifers. Dr. David Patterson lays out this program
since he is one of the leading authorities on this subject.
Dr. Patterson is a professor at the University of Missouri.
Wilkie and Katie’s involvement in 4-H has been fun
and successful for them. This year Katie won the Grand
Champion steer honor at the Carbon County Fair. In their
area the top two steers along with hogs and sheep get
to go onto a Champion of Champions Show including
Carbon, Stillwater, Park, Sweetgrass, and Meagher county
champions and Katie was able to win Reserve Champion
Market Beef there. Congratulations to the Braten’s
selection and breeding program. Roger is the beef
superintendent at the fair, continuing their involvement
together as a family and helping kids.
When I asked Katie why she liked her Salers influenced
cattle, she made comments like muscling, depth of rib,
length of body, wide based, wide tracking, balanced, easy
calving, and good disposition. I then knew that this little
girl, that I have known her whole life, has now developed
into a young lady who knows cattle and appreciates their
traits. As I get older, I realize these are the real joys of
raising a family in Montana.
Wilkie has been known to head out the door and up the
creek with his fishing pole and come back with a smile on
his face. He likes to hunt also. Certainly a great way to
enjoy the west and enjoy life
on the ranch. He is now taking
engineering classes.
I have a lot of respect for
this family and want to thank
them for all their support in
purchasing many bulls and
females from Skinner Ranch
Seedstock.
