The last thought that we will leave you with today
is the need for this industry, especially in the southern
part of the US, to analyze their program’s management
to incorporate the use of 14 to 15 month old bulls in
their operations. Since 1980 when I first went to work for
Glenn Brinkman, Brinks Brangus, I have encouraged the
selection for earlier puberty in our genetics. It has been
a goal to predominately sell younger bulls through the
GENETRUST sale at Suhn Cattle Co., Eureka, KS and
increase the number of that age bulls each year at Chimney
Rock and Cavender’s. Our customers have adapted their
operations to facilitate the use of them and have done
so successfully. They have worked in the most intensely
managed operations to ranches that run in some of the
most rugged country imaginable.
From the standpoint of GENETRUST it has
become an economic challenge to maintain and develop
bulls to 18 months to 2 years of age with current input
costs. Our customers who have successfully made this
work and have used these yearling bulls in the proper bull
to cow ratio and have managed them away from their
mature bulls after being picked up have had excellent
results. They agree that they have a better bull when that
18
month to 2 year old bull is turned out for the second
time. We need to all realize that the rate of genetic change
from the other protein sources available to the world
population is faster than it is with the beef industry. If we
are going to keep up and compete with these other protein
sources we need to utilize the available genetics and the
improvements that we all strive for as soon as they can be
incorporated into our industry.
We feel that the beef industry faces a very
challenging but exciting future. A future that will see an
influx of scientific advancements that will profoundly
change the way we do business. If Vernon Suhn, Craig
Green or anyone involved with GENETRUST can be of
any assistance to you please do not hesitate to call. We
are always happy to listen to your success but equally
important to receive your feedback on the direction to take
to better serve you.
