5L “Opti-Bulls”
Heterosis and breed complements are powerful tools. Here at 5L we’ve spent the last few years developing a product, which will make these
tools more accessible as well as more user friendly to our customers.
We have identified Charolais genetics that can complement the highly adaptable, maternally balanced and high carcass value genetics of
our Red & Black Angus. Many of our foundation Charolais comes the remaining registered Charolais females at the famed HooDoo Ranch in
Cody, Wyoming. HooDoo cattle broke the Charolais paradigm – less frame, more shape, more maternal and more marbling. Today, many
of those HooDoo white cows are still raising calves – even though they are 12-15 years old. Subsequently, we have added what we believe
are some of the best young Charolais genetics to carry this program forward and move faster.
When combined with 5L Red Angus, the resulting hybrids’ genetic makeup will support faster gains, more efficient feed conversion, consis-
tently heavier out-weights, increased dressing percent and capture of yield grade premiums – and they’ll still hit the Quality Grade targets 5L
genetics have been known from.

These bulls will be Buckskin in color. They will still be relatively moderate framed. They will definitely be
WideBodies
, and their dispositions
will fit within our Red Angus pens. They will represent an optimum balance of traits and a user-friendly means to harvest heterosis and
capture optimal levels of additive genetic variation available through the Charolais breed.
We call them “Opti-Bulls” and they are
just one more user-friendly tool 5L provides for our customers’ toolboxes to help ensure their continued
economic viability.
