Red Angus
Black Angus

The black, red-carrier cattle featured throughout the rest of this catalog are a result of
a focused and planned expansion of the Red Angus gene pool by the introduction of
some of the best cow families the Black Angus breed has to offer. When these black
cattle are mated to red cattle, the calves will be approximately 50% Red & 50% black.

HOW THE RED COLOR WORKS
B = dominant black gene b = recessive red gene bb = homozygous red
BB = homozygous black Bb = heterozygous black, red carrier
The red color of
Red Angus has
three distinct
advantages:
1) Red is the most populous col-
or
of cattle breeds world wide. Red
Angus provides a continuity and
uniformity of color to any cross-
breeding system.
2) Red is more heat tolerant than
black and the bronze pigmentation
gives great resistance to cancer eye
and sun burned udders. The major-
ity of the world’s cattle are in areas
that need heat tolerance, so the red
color is a definite advantage.
3) Red crossed red always breeds
true.
Red Angus carry no diluter
genes and thus avoid the grays that
result when crossbreeding with
blacks.

Red X Red
100% progeny
will be red
(
even if any red

be black. Reds will
be pure red and
blacks will all be
black red-carriers.
Black Red-Carrier X
Black Red Carrier
75 % of progeny will
be black and 25%
will be red. Of the
blacks, 2/3
(or 50%
of the total progeny)
will be red carriers,
and 1/3
(or 25% of
total progeny)
will
be non red carriers.

red- cariers
A red calf, even if from black parents, is pure red (bb)
It has
