Genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) have recently been
introduced to the American Hereford Association (AHA) through a partnership
with GeneSeek®, a Neogen Corporation company. Ultimately, ranchers will still be
using EPDs to make the most informed selection decisions among their livestock.
The EPDs should be considered the genetic improvement tool of choice since EPDs
account for all the available information on an animal, such as individual measures,
progeny data, pedigree and now, genomic results. GE-EPDs may be used just like
conventional EPDs. The only difference is the increased accuracy, enabling ranchers
to make more confident selection decisions. Commercial producers can use GE-
EPDs to select bulls with less risk since GE-EPDs are more likely to represent a bull’s
true genetic potential. Hereford breeders who provide GE-EPDs demonstrate a
sincere commitment to giving their customers superior selection tools. Buying bulls
with GE-EPDs is like purchasing genetic insurance. Through the evolution of this
technology, the AHA plans to keep breeders advised of progress in the development
