“A contemporary group is a set of animals that have had an equal
opportunity to perform: same sex, managed alike, and exposed to the
same environmental conditions and feed resources. Contemporary
groups are the cornerstone of genetic evaluation. They are the best
way to account for environmental effects so that remaining differenc-
es among animals may be attributed to genetics, ultimately resulting
in expected progeny differences (EPDs).”
---American Angus Association
We take proper contemporary grouping very seriously at SydGen. We
try to keep our contemporary groups as large as our pastures and fa-
cilities allow, and run them as “same sex” pastures whenever possi-
ble. It is every Angus breeder’s responsibility to do the most accurate
job possible turning in data, and proper contemporary grouping is the
very most basic concept for National Cattle Evaluation.
