Fall Yearlings
We are certain most buyers of these fall yearlings (Lots 78-172)
will want to take them home after the sale. They are semen-checked,
vaccinated, and ready to go. If you would like to leave him here on
our wintering program until April, the cost will be $400.00. This will
include a re-check on his semen test.
There are four weaning contemporary groups in this set of bulls. The
bulls lotted as 78-133 were raised at our Garcia and Dodson locations
and they are mostly natural calves, with 4 ET calves. Lots 134-172
have three basic contemporary groups: natural calves out of two-year-
olds, ET calves with commercial dams, and ET calves out of registered
recipients raised at our Elsberry location. Those three groups were fed
in one feeding group. Average Daily Gain on the both groups this year
was only 3.08 lbs./day, compared to our historical average of about 3.5
lbs./day. Higher adj. weaning weights, and abundant grass throughout
the feeding period caused our gains to be less, since the bulls have
continuous access to grass. Adj. YW average was 1,269 lbs., only 17
lbs. less than the previous year, as weaning weights were up 9 lbs. to
average 776. Average frame score on all fall bulls in the sale was 6.0
and average adj. SC was 37.3 cm. Average adj. IMF was 3.96%, REA
of 15.1, rib fat of .29 and rump fat of .33, making the bulls substantial-
ly leaner than previous years.
Calves were brought in from all locations and weaned, with weaning
weights taken on May 16-17, about 10 days after actual weaning. Bulls
were put on a complete, self-fed ration in two 20-acre fescue pastures
until yearling weights, scrotal measurements, and ultrasound scans
were taken on September 9 and 12, for total days on feed of 115 or 119
days. Their final weight and ultrasound weight are the same. There was
no “warm-up” (or shrink out) period between the date weaning weights
were taken and their beginning test weight. The feed we have used on
these bulls now for twelve years, Purina Accuration Grower, does have
limiters in it, and we have been pleased with the condition and the
soundness of the bulls coming off test. Bulls were all vaccinated with
BoviShield Gold 5 VL5 and poured with Dectomax when they came off
test, and gradually converted to a silage and hay based ration, which
they stay on until sale day. We wean late, and have a short feeding
period in order to better utilize spring grass, and to help keep the bulls
from being over-conditioned.
