Annual CSBBA Performance Tested Bull Sale.
Last year I began this welcome note by saying CSBBA is determined to become a reliable and consistent genetic supplier of
Beefmaster and Beefmaster Advancer genetics to both the commercial and purebred cattlemen. As promised, we are returning
with 125 quality performance tested bulls. It continues to be CSBBA’s intent to create long term relationships with our buyers
and friends.
The Central States Beefmaster breeders believe in data collection and in utilizing the information gathered for the improve-
ment of our herds and our breed. We are delighted that 23 of our members and friends have chosen to objectively measure
their bulls in a gain test scenario, to collect all the relative performance data available on those bulls and to make that data
available to our customers.
We believe that today’s beef cattle business, now and in the future will become more and more reliant on objective measure-
ments that will drive data based economic decisions. In this set of bulls you will find all of the EPD values BBU offers with noth-
ing held back, glossed over or adjusted. We are also making available to you all the performance data, gain data ultra sound
scans and more importantly all of the ratios that show you how they compare to bulls similarly treated in their contemporary
groups to assist you in making your decisions.
We believe in studying ratios and EPD’s in our selection decisions and using those values to drive our program forward, espe-
cially when bulls are combined from varying weaning contemporary groups. Performance measures, ratios, and EPD’s provide
context when describing an animal. Ratios and EPD’s will help identify the top bulls, which is ultimately the goal.
How Good is this set of Bulls?
If you are looking to add pounds to your calf crop there are 93 out of 123 that are above breed average for WW EPD’s. If you
are looking for calving ease bulls to breed to heifers there are 30 out of 123 bulls with below breed average BW EPD’s. There
are 87 bulls above breed average for YW EPD’’s, 90 for TM, 80 for SC, 87 for $M, and 84 for $T EPD’s. We have included a Trait
Leaders page to help you identify these curve bending individuals.
This year you will notice that CSBBA created a Performance Bull Sale Selection Index. The Sale Selection Index is comprised of
50% EPD, 25% On Test ADG, and 25% Visual score to equal 100 of the Sale Selection Index. This index was used to set the sales
order with the exception of one bull, the Breeders Choice Bull. The Breeders Choice Bull will be decided upon by votes casted
by those consignors present the evening prior to the sale. The Breeders Choice Bull will sell first regardless of Sale Selection
Index score and ranking.
In terms of the quality of bulls and useful data, this set of bulls is as good as any set of bulls being offered in the Beefmaster
Breed this fall.
