We are often asked how we pick the sale cattle. Bulls are pretty much
selected by birth date. All fall yearling bulls that are saleable are in
the sale. When we start calving in January, we put January bull calves
into two pastures, according to age of dam, and when those pastures
are full, with 100+ head or so, this year about February 1, those are
the bull calves for the sale. These calves are culled at weaning for
performance, scrotal size and structure. Later calves are used for Mid-
land, the SydGen Influence Bull Sale in the spring, replacement bulls,
or private treaty sales. Cows are primarily selected from the six- and
seven-year-old cows, with a “mandatory retirement age” of seven,
except in certain cases when one was held an extra year so we could
keep her heifer calf to replace her. Our fall heifers are basically split
down the middle in May after weaning, with half going in the sale and
half retained. Flush sister groups are split as well, to make the sale
offering and the keeper heifer group very similar. Spring heifer calves
are pretty much done the same way, although only a third of our heifer
calves are sold as heifer calves to allow us to have bred heifers in the
next sale.
