Incredible EPD profile on this soggy, thick-made calf that has caught the attention
of many visitors.
Sire was the $210,000 top-selling bull of the 2010 Connealy Angus sale to
Express Ranches and Sandpoint Cattle Co., and has already amassed a tremen-
dous siring record. Sons from his first calf crop have sold for $135,000, $80,000,
$80,000, $55,000, $50,000, $49,000 and $40,000.
Dam was a $15,000 selection as a bred heifer from the 2011 Express Sale where
she posted the fourth highest Marbling EPD of the offering.
Great-grandam has been called the best bred heifer to ever leave Pfeiffer Farms,
Orlando, OK, and later sold for $37,000 as a mature donor.
Selling half interest and full possession.

Another top EPD profile, out of a good three-year-old daughter of Corona.
Maternal brother in last year’s sale brought $2,300 to Kevin Buck, Elsberry, MO.
Really slick haired with excellent muscle expression and length.
Third dam is the $15,000 dam of Leachman Boom Time, who sold to New Haven
Angus, Leavenworth, KS after serving as a donor in our program.
Selling half interest and full possession.

There is a wide range of thought as to the merit of genomic testing
for the production traits. Last year for the sale, we tested 16 on Pfizer
HD 50K and 16 on IG384. Only two of the animals moved enough
to affect their value (one moved up and one moved down). This is
logical to us. As a herd that turns in a lot of phenotypes (data) to
AHIR, we have already built up the accuracy, and don’t have as much
to gain from genomics. (We estimate this herd turns in some 15,000
pieces of information to AHIR yearly.)
At the NBCEC symposium, “Delivering Genomic Technology to the
Beef Industry” in Kansas City last March, Tom Gubbins of TeMania
Angus in Australia said, “Those who can benefit the least contribute
the most” and “Those who can benefit the most contribute the least.”
He also stated, “We are early adopters, but we are not adopting this
yet.” He did state that as time goes on, genomics should become
more accurate and more important in our selection process.
We feel very similarly, that currently the value is mostly for
younger cattle that have not had gain and ultrasound information
processed yet, or individuals who land in very small contemporary
groups. We do agree the best way to utilize genomic predictions
is to integrate them into the EPD profile, just as AAA is doing. This
year we will genomic test about the same number as last year. They
were not processed in time to be included in the EPDs printed in the
book. Please check our website in mid-October, and we will post
those results, giving you the opportunity to see how the EPDs were
changed by genomics. Also, on sale day, we will have a print-out
posted by the office with the most up-to-date EPDs available on every
sale animal.
