Hello and welcome to the 2013 Diamond J Angus Production Sale. We have learned a lot in the last year, follow-
ing our first production sale, and are coming into our second sale armed with that knowledge to pass on to you, our
customers. One of the many comments from last year was “you have something for everyone.” This is something we
took to heart and will try to offer every year and improve on. We strive for calving ease with performance and car-
cass quality to go along with that. Calving ease is great as long as you are also happy at weaning time, otherwise
you probably overdid the calving-ease trait a bit. Carcass means quality and the end result of our efforts is a protein
product people desire and enjoy. We cannot forget where our beef ends up and the last time I checked, a quality
steak fetched a lot more than a burger.
One other comment we heard was “I wanted to come to your sale, but we were busy in the field.” We decided to
go to an evening sale to accommodate any work schedules during the daytime.
We have also tried some new sires this year including Consensus 7229, Incentive 9J17, Iron Mountain 8066 and
a new herd sire, Buzz 6058. All were very successful choices and their sons will surely compliment and improve the
traits for everyone’s herds. They were all chosen for “performance,” some with calving ease for heifers and some
with moderate birth weight for cows. Returning for consecutive years are Upward 307R, Final Answer 0035, Kes-
slers Frontman R001, Net Income 7024, and for clean-up herd sires, Final Answer sons 0041 and 0336, Ellingson
Attraction 0309, Final Answer 0035’s maternal brother NW9926, the most impressive Schaff Summit 9067, and last
year’s Lot 76, Country Time 8080. All of the clean-up herd sires were purchased from either the Martin Schaff and
Ellingson Angus programs or Schaff Angus Valley, reason being, “performance.”
We are not going to say the future looks all rosy for the cattle industry or that the drought is over and it will
surely rain. None of us knows for certain what the future will bring, but we can tell you, whatever it is, if you are
prepared with some quality cattle that have some performance in them, then they will be the ones that are desired by
the feedlot, the restaurant and the consumer. Those cattle will always be worth good money and the rest will be just
hamburger.
The Hatzenbuhlers are a family that strives to do things right and not get stuck in a rut and not try new things.
This involves a learning curve, openness, and a willingness to take a risk. With that in mind, we hope to get better
every year while still “having something for everyone.”
Take care and have a successful year!
