One June mOrning in 1995, at the mississippi state univer-
sity whitetail breeding facility, a legend was bOrn – a
smaller than nOrmal buck fawn, by a buck named white-
hOuse and a dOe named 3_6. this scrawny little fawn was
named dr. d after dr. damarus, head Of the whitetail
breeding facility at mississippi state.
A
t the age of one-year-old, dr. d developed a dis-
ease in one of his toes. after long deliberation,
the staff decided to euthanize the poor thing and
put him out of his misery. then dr. damarus called dick
wheeler, a friend and prominent deer breeder in texas at
the time, and said, “dick, we have a yearling buck that you
need in your program. for a small donation to the univer-
sity, you can have him.”
“i don’t need another deer, especially a deformed one,”
dick replied.
“no, you don’t understand; you need this one, and when
you see his rack you’ll know why,” said dr. damarus.
so dick gave a small donation to the school, they removed
one of the yearling’s toes, and he brought dr. d to double
wheel ranch in san angelo, texas.
dick wheeler bred dr. d to virtually every doe in his fa-

cility for seven years. each year,
dr. d’s rack got bigger and bigger
add stayed clean as a whistle. by
the age of seven, dr. d had ac-
quired a name for himself through
his offspring and had grown an
almost perfect typical rack scor-
ing 200 1/8 gross with less than
two inches of total deductions. his
best typical net score of 197 7/8
put him in the top 15 boone and
crockett net typical scores of all
time.
not only could he grow such a
rack, he could throw that gene to
his sons and daughters.
by the age of eight, he had pro-
duced numerous 200-inch typical
bucks that were now making a
name for themselves.
bob and Janice carter, owners
of the circle J&b ranch in sey-
mour, texas, had been long ad-
mirers of great typical whitetails
and had a breeding facility of their
own. going against the norm and
breeding strictly for typical racks
was harder than it first appeared.
chris timmons, manager of the circle J&b, got
wind through the grapevine that dr. d might be
for sale. chris went to the carters and said, “we
know what he can do on common doe, just think
what he could do on really good typical doe.”
the carters, replied, “buy him.” chris called
dick and negotiations started at $100,000. with
a difference in the amount of $5000 they could
not come to an agreement. chris suggested, know-
ing that dick spent a great deal of time in vegas,
“why don’t we flip a coin for the $5000?” dick
agreed, and the deal was done. two weeks later,
Janice, bob and chris drove to the double wheel
to retrieve their diamond. when it came time for
the coin toss, chris flipped the coin, dick called
heads and chris and the carters drove off with dr.
d and a $5000 credit.
dr. d has been an icon at the circle J&b ranch
producing over 50 typical racked bucks scoring
over 200 inches. he has 297 registered offspring,
and it can be easily said that he was the foun-
dation of the largest typical herd in the nation.
his sons and daughters are carrying on the same
tradition. thanks to dick wheeler and dr. d, the
circle J&b ranch is proud of their typical pro-
gram and the name dr. d has given them.
dr. d is still alive and limping and continues to
produce legends on the circle J&b ranch at the
age of 16 years.
