The Ball Game at Kidron Park
Thanks to some brainstorming by the WDFO board and the auction committee, those who at-
tended the annual Ohio Trophy & Breeder Auction on August 31st were treated to some great
home grown softball. After a great supper courtesy of the WDFO, everybody was able to forget
low auction prices and EHD concerns (for a few hours at least), as we watched a few good games
of softball. The players from PA and IN soon found out that these Ohio guys are as serious about
softball as they are about good deer genetics, in spite of a few misleading team names! The Cham-
pions for example- the Kidron Button Bucks. We didn’t know till after the dust settled that these
button bucks were not fawns, but adult bucks with their antlers cut! To save time, all games were
played with the batter starting with a 1-1 count, and only one home run allowed each inning.
The action began with the Middlefield Indians playing the PA Pushovers. The PA Pushovers
were pushed over in the end after it seemed like they would be the easy winners early on. But the
Indians snuck by them and shot PA’s hopes full of scores. Final score: Middlefield 22, PA 10.
Next the Kidron Button Bucks took on the Indiana Mudslingers. Despite a heroic effort by
the Mudslingers, the Button Bucks (who looked like button bucks when you compared their ages
against those of the Mudslingers!) succeeded in slinging the Mudslingers back to their homes.
Then it was time for the Holmes Co. Bombers to meet the Dream Team Classics! We are very
glad that those Dream Team guys are winners when it come to raising deer, because their softball
playing needs a bit of help! Perhaps by next year they will hire on a retired major league player?!
With the score Holmes Co. Bombers -10 Dream Team - 0, Will was heard giving his guys a pep
talk. “ Alright guys, we got em just were we want em!” Nice try, but the effects were just like the
score- 0. Final score; Holmes Co. Bombers-20 Dream Team Classic-0.
Time for the world series! The Kidron Button Bucks took on the Holmes Co. Bombers. This
was serious now. The winners will get a nice trophy, a free ad in the newsletter and a years worth
of bragging rights! With the temperature still soaring no warm-ups were needed. After a mighty
effort the score was Kidron -9 Holmes Co. - 5. The Bombers were at bat with the bases loaded
and two outs. A home run would have tied the game. But the Button Bucks had a homegrown
hero on the mound and managed to preserve their win! Dean was seen at the auction on Saturday
wearing a well deserved winners medal and a big smile! Well done everybody! I think the Cleve-
land Indians are overlooking a lot of talent here!
Hopefully this will be an annual tournament from now on. And probably there will be a few
other states brushing up some softball skills to see if they can knock off these Ohio guys! BRING
IT ON, BOYS we’re ready for ya!
