New Therapies to Consider with your Veterinarian:
Every year in the deer breeding industry, there are new
ideas and approaches to current treatment options.
With each new case, Veterinarians continue to improve
more efficient treatment protocols for deer. Today, we
will shed some insight on new treatment options and
ideas for unresponsive cases involving Pneumonia,
Mastitis, and Foot and mouth rot. Recent new treatment
techniques, combined with past therapeutic plans, have
tremendously increased positive responses to previously
difficult cases.
Pneumonia:
1. Radiographs of chest- X Rays
2. Furosemide therapy- drug to increase removal of fluid
from the body
3. Nebulization therapy- inhalant therapy delivery
method that delivers a specific and high concentration
of medicine specifically to the lungs. Commonly used in
asthmatic patients.
In addition to a proper Physical Exam, Chest radiographs,
Furosemide therapy,
and Nebulization
are new concepts
to deer Veterinarian
protocols that are
becoming more
common practice
pneumonia. Actual
pictures of the
chest and what is
going on inside the
lungs have proven
critical for specific
pneumonia treatment protocols. Furosemide is a diuretic
and works on the kidneys to remove fluid from the body
via increased urination. Fluid on the lungs can severely
affect oxygenation of the lungs. It is obvious that oxygen
is critical for improved positive response to pneumonia
therapy. Before you can nebulize a pneumonia patient,
it is critical that the lungs are not full of fluid. If you dilate
the bronchioles before removal of fluid from the lungs,
a deer can actually drown in its own fluid. Albuterol is
