Dear Cattle Friends,
The cattle market is great! All of the cattle folks I know work very hard, and they
deserve to receive the excellent prices this market has brought to us. Most of us
have lived long enough to see market cycles in land, grain prices and now, cattle.
So people ask, how long will these strong cattle prices last? No one knows for
sure, but this cycle has the ingredients to last several years. We can’t plant cows
fence row to fence row like farmers can with corn or wheat. Rebuilding the cow-
herd takes years in the cattle business.
Speaking of fences, many have been pulled up, and the ground is now being farmed. I don’t foresee that land
going back into grass for cattle. Lots of CRP land has also turned into grain fields. One analyst that I follow feels
we will not see the cattle prices peak for 12 to 16 months … we will see. All I know for sure is we all need to sell
some cattle at these prices to get some of these record-high prices!
The demand for bred females are setting new records. My advice is if you are happy with your cow numbers
where they are at in your herd, turn out Charolais bulls and sell the steers and all the heifers for a few years, and
bank these high prices. If you feel the need to get replacement females or have a market for them, then select one
of our outstanding Angus bulls. Either way we have an excellent selection of breeding bulls in this sale for you.
Our Charolais bull offering consists of some super long-bodied, thick-made bulls. We started with 58 bulls and
have culled down to 42 head. We selected for growth traits, calving ease, disposition and eye appeal. I knew when
we sold so many cows that to be able to provide our customers with a good-quality choice, we had to reduce the
number of bulls we sold last year, and we did just that.
I sorted this group of bulls off early last winter and not one head was sold out of that pen after that. We wintered
these Charolais bulls on a slow-growth ration. They were summered on a quarter and 80 of native pasture, and we
brought them home at the end of October. They are doing very well and gaining and growing like crazy. They are
all virgin bulls, and all semen checked and measured on Dec 5th.
These excellent Charolais bulls will cover a lot of ground and breed a lot of cows. Never has that been more
important as open cows have never been more costly to an operation. Please consider these bulls as most were
either off of first-calf heifers or born from great cows just a bit later in the spring.
If you are shopping for an outstanding Angus bull, please take a look at our offering. Most are A.I. sired and out of
some great herd-building cow families. I’ll tell you more about each one in the footnotes.
Thanks for coming to our sale! Please join us at 11:30 in the Kist Café for a complimentary meal. We appreciate
your business!
Thanks,
Jan, Sally and Randy Severance
