Larry Mead the Mentor:
Very soon after I became the Mon-
tadale secretary in 1975, Larry had me helping clerk Indiana
sales including the Hoosier Holiday Suffolk Sale and the East
Central District Corriedale Sale. This was a decade prior to us-
ing computers so all clerking was done by hand. The experi-
ence also helped me identify the pre and post-sale work that
was necessary for a successful sale. Through the years, Larry
was always available to give advice along the way and make
suggestions for improvements.
I consider it one of my greatest honors to be the person to
present him a “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the 2013 Na-
tional Pedigreed Livestock Council meeting. Thanks Larry!

In 1972, John Frost and his son Rob went to the great Midwest Sale
in Sedalia, Missouri
for the first time. They drove into Sedalia on a Thursday evening with no motel reserva-
tions and got a room at the sale headquarters, the Ramada Inn. The entire show was on
Friday and the sale was on Saturday. Things have changed over the years.
As a consignor, and a member of sale staff, the thing that has impressed me most about
Larry Mead is his relentless attention to detail. I believe it is the secret to his success in
building the Midwest Sale into the greatest sheep sale in the US! Larry not only knew
everyone’s name, but could remember the names of their parents and children. Larry
had a vision and a plan for everything. The lot numbers had to be applied in a certain
spot on the sheep’s top. The sale block, bleachers, and every chair had a spot where they
were to be located. The fan in the auction block had to be placed at a certain angle to
keep the auctioneers comfortable. And of course, the paper towels used in the block had
to be Viva paper towels.
Over the years, all these countless “little things”, plus all the “big things” contributed to
making the Midwest Sale the sheep event of the year! Larry’s tireless dedication to the
Midwest Sale and the sheep industry is unparalleled. His vision and leadership in build-
ing the great Midwest Sale are to be commended.
Thanks, Larry, for all you have done!
