All Junior Exhibitors, 4-H and FFA members, ages

are invited to participate. Any youth who has participated in any post-secondary
(university, college, junior college, or technical school) competitive event of a similar nature is ineligible to compete in this contest. Age is determined

BEEF
JUNIOR DIVISION: 8-12 YEARS OF AGE
ESSAY CONTEST
Junior division entries must be a minimum of 250 words. Senior division entries must be a minimum of 500 words. Evaluation will be
based on (1) originality and creativity, (2) neatness, legibility (typed copy is preferred), grammar and spelling, (3) completeness of the
discussion of the topic, (4) accuracy of information, and (5) thoroughness. Include cover page with exhibitor name, division, and
resources used.
Senior Topic:
"What do you think is the largest challenge that agriculture is facing today?"
Junior Topic:
"What have
you learned from showing?"
Entries in this category must be submitted by Friday, March 24, 2017. Essay entries will not be
accepted onsite.
PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
Contestants should submit one entry no smaller than 3” x 5” and no larger than 8” x 10”. All entries must be matted. The
photograph should include cattle. Entries will be judged on quality of photograph, originality of shot/pose, and overall audience
appeal. The photograph must be the work of the youth participant. Please include your name and division on the back of the entry.
GRAPHIC DESIGN CONTEST
Create a promotional flyer or brochure (8 ½” x 11”) about designated topic. This contest will enable participants to use computer
technology to design materials that promote the beef industry and activities. This piece must be original work. The entries will be
judged on the following areas: originality, message, attracts attention, use of space and design. Please include your name and division
on a separate card attached to the design project, if it is not already included in the text of the project. Winner’s artwork may be used in
2018 promotions.

Junior Topic:
How to pick out your show animal (contestants may choose to
present this topic on a steer or heifer).
PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST — SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 2017
The contest consists of a prepared verbal speech on specified topic related to the beef industry. Speech will be given without the use of
any diagrams, charts, props or visual aids. Brief note cards may be used. Participants will be judged on the composition of their
material, their delivery, and appearance relative to their topic. Presentations should be of original and factual material. At the conclusion
of the speech, contestants must state the resources they used. Contestants should follow the time limits and topics based on their age
category –
Senior:
5 to 7 minutes in length about "Beef sustainability with regards to society, the environment, or the economy" (you
may choose to talk about any number of the listed sustainability categories).
Junior:
3 to 5 minutes in length about "Getting your
animal ready to show". Following the speech, judges will be allowed up to two minutes to ask questions. Public Speaking will begin at
1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 1st.
Mailed entries should be postmarked by Friday, March 24 to Carla McLachlan Anthony Hall, 474 S. Shaw Lane, Rm.
1287, East Lansing, MI 48824 or submit onsite starting at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 31 until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday,
April 1 at the MCA display booth in the MSU Pavilion. Winners will be announced at the end of the Breed Sales.
