About the Coming 2-year-old Bulls…
We have now moved most of our cows to a May 1 to June 30 calving due
date. They are range calved and summered on grass at the ranch south
of Hershey, then calves are weaned in October. The cows graze corn
stalks from November to March, and are drove back to the ranch in April in
preparation for calving again, so they typically graze about 11 months a year.
The weaned bull calves are grown to yearling time at the home place
near North Platte and ultrasounded for carcass, measured for scrotal and
weighed then turned out on sandhills grass in section and ½ section pastures
until fall when they return to North Platte to be wintered and semen tested in
January and prepared for this sale. They are never topped or picked through.
